“1937 MARYLAND TERCENTENARY COMMEMORATIVE HALF DOLLAR” (9 minutes) The 1937 Maryland commemorative was designed by one of America’s great sculptors, Hans K. Schuler (who was actually born in Germany in an area now French). Schuler’s wonderful sculptural works can be found throughout Baltimore and Washington, D.C., but his coin design — while appropriate for a celebration of Maryland’s founding — is rather perfunctory in my opinion. This lecture will soon be paired with another considering his larger artistic output.
