“MOUNT PALOMAR OBSERVATORY; Not Much of a Stamp, but a Great Day Trip!” (25 minutes) uses the 1948 U.S. stamp to tell the story of one of the greatest scientific instruments built during the 20th Century. The dream of George E. Hale, who built the world’s three largest astronomical instruments (for a time). Perhaps the 200-inch reflecting disk was the greatest achievement — as this was a true expression of the universe attempting to understand itself. It is also a spectacular Southern California day trip.
